Gumboot Rally seeks commitment this Valentine’s Day

Beginning Valentine’s Day, the Yellowknife Association for Community Living is signing up teams for the 25th annual Gumboot Rally.

A new online Gumboot Rally pledge site is set to launch at midnight on Feb. 14.

In honour of the silver anniversary, this year’s fundraising goal is $25,000.

Established in 1992, the Gumboot Rally is a beloved and fabulous annual tradition established to raise funds for the Yellowknife Association for Community Living.

The 2017 Rally will take place from 10am to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, outside the Abe Miller Building.

The event is annually attended by teams of creatively-costumed families, students, school staff, sports clubs, government workers, professionals, business owners and their employees, union members, media personalities, and politicians. The morning features contests of skill – such as The Boot Toss and The Boot Bowl-A-Thon – along with live music, busker shows and a BBQ.

Teams of five participants show their love for the work the Association does by collecting pledges in advance of the rally. In the past, teams have organized office bake sales, workplace hockey pools and Survivor pools, putts-for-cash during lunch hour, silent auctions, 50/50 draws, school lunch specials and other creative fundraising idea.

Funds collected support services offered by YKACL, such as:

·         Skills Training and Community Inclusion

·         Family and Children’s Services

·         Supported Independent Living

·         Employment Services

·         Literacy Outreach

The Yellowknife Association for Community Living provides lifelong support for people with disabilities and their families.
