YK Eats

Think of this page as more restaurant listing than critical review, but for a small city, Yellowknife has a remarkable number of eateries. It’s just one of the ways the place punches well above its weight.

Just visiting? You should know it’s hard to find servers and overhead items like rent and electricity are incredibly expensive in Yellowknife. This equation often spits out sub-standard restaurant service paired with sky-high prices. But as most locals know, against the odds, there are still plenty of places serving great grub. Loosen your collar and the slow service won’t kill you, either.

Whether you’re in town for a few days, been here a while, or were born on the Ingraham Trail, here are a few culinary options. We’ll be updating this section regularly, so email info@vergecomms.ca to recommend your favourite spot for the next installment.

World Shore Lunch Championship

On June 6th, 2015, the top chefs, fishing guides and lodge cooks in the North will gather at the Northern Frontier Visitor Centre in Yellowknife for the second annual World Shore Lunch Championship event! In this event, teams compete to cook the best fish "shore lunch" dinner, which will be judged by both a panel of experts and the hungry audience! Participating teams are encouraged to bring props, costumes and decorations to help showcase their business to the attendees. This event also features live entertainment, a kid's corner with fun activities for families, a beer garden with fun activities for grown-ups, a live and silent auction, and of course, the obligatory non-fish option for those wierdos who don't like fish (BOOO!)

There is no fee to participate; instead, you simply purchase tickets which can be redeemed for fish, appetizers or beverages. Each purchase of four food tickets will earn you one vote ticket - which you can use to vote for your favorite chef in order to help them claim the coveted prize of World Shore Lunch Champion Chef!
