TRANSPORTATION

Access to Yellowknife is via air  with direct flights from Edmonton, Calgary or Vancouver, or by an all weather road that connects to the province of Alberta.  Yellowknife’s regional airport handles hundreds of flights each month.  It’s the hub for connecting flights to and from southern Canada, and flights from many smaller communities in the NWT and Nunavut.

Air Canada and Westjet offer direct flights from Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.  Yellowknife can be easily reached via connecting flights from major Canadian and US cities.

Regional airlines, Canadian North and First Air also offer a daily jet service from Edmonton to Yellowknife and Air North offers a twice weekly service from Ottawa or Whitehorse.

If you are planning to drive, Yellowknife is 1,503 kms (934 miles) north of Edmonton.  The final 523 kms (325 miles) are within the Northwest Territories, and the highway winds past a number of spectacular waterfalls, before it turns north and enters rocky Precambrian Shield country about 161 kms (100 miles) outside of Yellowknife.   For driving information download the Territorial Road and Campground Guide.
